Since the first news release last year there has been considerable response and discussion. (Recall the big picture vision: a backcountry hut-to-hut trail and waterway system linking the Similkameen and Boundary areas with the Okanagan, Shuswap, Thompson and Monashee, ending in the Columbia region near Revelstoke.) A regional steering group of outdoor enthusiasts and business leaders in the Shuswap has formed to move the idea forward, and consultation with the CSRD, First Nations leadership, municipalities, community groups, tourism operators and other stakeholders is underway. |
And the path just got a little clearer! The Community Futures Development Corporation of the Shuswap has secured funding assistance through the Department of Western Economic Diversification to assist with the initial cost of assessing the overall economic, recreation and environmental viability of the trail circuit in our region. This will include an assessment of regional community support for the concept, how to integrate with the current regional parks and trail planning underway, and an initial round of base mapping. |
The goal is to create a regional partnership in the Shuswap that can support local trail planning initiatives, while exploring a broader partnership within the proposed Five Rings Trail strategy. |
